CFD trading suits capital you can afford to set aside, not money you need.

Opening a position is the cheap part. Paying for it over a year is what separates a workable broker from an expensive one.

That is the lens we used for eToro's flagship feature, CopyTrader, and for this page. We do not rank brokers by bonus size or app design. We price the trade. For a Pakistani reader, the first question is not whether CopyTrader is good, but whether it is reachable at all from Pakistan, and what it costs if it ever is.

Our starting point was a standard calculation: the full cost of a round-turn position, spread plus commission plus overnight financing, spread over 12 months of realistic activity. Then we checked the practical layer, which for this market means availability, currency conversion, and whether the platform's core mechanic even functions without a local entity.

NOTE
CopyTrader is the feature under review here. Every figure below is drawn from eToro's published fee and regulation pages plus the availability data we could verify. Figures describe the platform, not a Pakistan-specific offer.

The Method We Actually Use

We start with cost per trade, not features per page. A broker's marketing page lists dozens of selling points; a pricing schedule lists the four numbers that decide whether an account survives a year of trading.

The sequence is fixed:

01
Price one standard-lot round-turn on a major instrument, spread plus commission.
02
Add overnight financing and calculate the drag over a 30-day hold.
03
Check the withdrawal fee and any inactivity charge that quietly compounds.
04
Verify the licence, the legal entity behind it, and what that entity covers.
05
Test the platform's core mechanic: does the headline feature work as described?
CopyTrader is judged at step five. Everything before it is arithmetic that has to hold up first.

CopyTrader as a Cost Problem

CopyTrader mirrors the positions of other users automatically, proportionally to your allocated amount. It is not a managed account. You keep control of your money and you can stop copying at any time.

The practical catch is that a copied portfolio is a live portfolio. Every position the trader you copy opens carries its own spread cost, and CFDs carry overnight financing that accrues day after day. If the person you copy holds ten positions for a month, you are paying financing on ten positions for a month, whether or not the strategy is winning.

We modelled a test allocation of USD 1,000 across a copy portfolio with five open CFD positions held for 30 days. The mechanics matter more than the exact number: costs accrue in the background regardless of the strategy's direction. Copying a high-frequency trader means paying spread far more often than copying a swing trader.

Cost elementHow it applies to CopyTraderPractical effect
SpreadApplied per copied position on entry and exitCost scales with trade frequency
Overnight financingCharged on CFDs held past the daily cut-offDrag grows with holding period
Stock commission0% on real stock positionsEquities cheaper than CFDs here
Withdrawal feeUSD 5 on USD investment accountsFixed, so it hurts small balances more
Inactivity feeUSD 10/month after 12 months idlePunishes dormant copy positions

The line that catches people is inactivity. An account with an open copy position that nobody is monitoring can still go dormant, and the charge lands monthly.

PRO TIP
Before allocating to any copied trader, read their holding period. A strategy that closes positions daily pays spread daily. A strategy that holds for weeks pays financing instead. Both are costs; only one is visible in the return chart.

What a Copy Allocation Really Costs

A copy allocation is a portfolio you did not build and cannot fully predict. You can cap the amount, stop the copy, and see the other trader's history. You cannot see their cost basis, their financing bill, or the exact moment they will exit.

Path of the money
You sendMay include credit card / Bank transferBroker accountUSD plus select localsOpen positionNo PK pricing statedYou withdraw2-5 business days

That asymmetry is the real price of outsourcing the decisions. It is not a scam and it is not a warning against the feature. It is simply the trade-off, and it belongs in the cost column along with the spread.

Our rule is that a copied allocation should never exceed the amount you would be comfortable losing entirely without changing your financial plans. That is not pessimism. It is the same sizing rule that applies to any leveraged product.

The following conditions apply to how we score copy features across brokers:

  • Cost transparency: are spread, financing, and withdrawal fees published as numbers?
  • Mechanic honesty: is copying described as discretionary, or as a guarantee?
  • Risk controls: can you cap allocation, stop copying, and see loss limits?
  • Regulatory cover: which entity holds your account, and does it supervise retail conduct?
  • Currency cost: does a PKR-based user pay a conversion spread on entry and exit?

EToro performs well on mechanic honesty. CopyTrader is presented as a mirroring tool, not as an investment product or a promised return, and that framing is accurate.

Where eToro Sits for Pakistan

The important finding for this market is access, and it is not a pricing question.

Multiple country-availability checks list Pakistan as not accepting new clients, and eToro's own app listing states that services are unavailable in some countries due to local restrictions. The sources we reviewed do not identify a Pakistan-specific eToro entity, and no local licence appears in the regulatory framework covering State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

NOTE
That means the CopyTrader numbers above describe the platform as published. They are not a Pakistan offer, and we do not present them as one.

It is important to note what this does and does not mean. Retail forex and CFD trading is not criminalised in Pakistan. What exists is an absence of local licensing: SECP does not issue retail forex or CFD broker licences, and SBP does not permit margin-based currency trading inside the country. Residents who trade do so through brokers regulated abroad, under FCA, ASIC, or CySEC supervision, funded through legitimate banking channels.

Account availabilityListed as not accepting new clientsReal-account signup is the blocker
Demo portfolioUSD 100,000 virtualAvailable for practice, no real exposure
Local currency accountUSD base only; GBP, EUR, AUD, DKK localsPKR holders pay conversion cost

The demo account is the one piece of the platform genuinely open to a Pakistani user. It uses a USD 100,000 virtual portfolio with live pricing and no real money at risk, which makes it a reasonable place to study how copied positions behave, how financing accrues, and how quickly spread costs accumulate on a high-turnover strategy. The same caveat applies: this is a practice environment, not a live trading route for residents.

Reading a Licence Correctly

Calling a globally licensed broker unregulated is a factual error, and it is the kind of error that gets a review dismissed.

EToro operates under a global and regional regulatory framework. What our sources do not show is a Pakistani licence, which is a different statement with a different consequence.

The licence, in plain terms

What it does not cover

The distinction has a practical edge. A licence tells you which entity holds your money, which compensation scheme (if any) covers you, and which regulator you can escalate a complaint to. When the entity is outside your jurisdiction, escalation becomes slower and more expensive. That is a friction cost, not a prohibition.

For a Pakistani reader choosing any international broker, the checklist is the same:

  • Which legal entity opens the account, and where is it registered?
  • Which regulator supervises that entity, and is it a tier-one authority?
  • Are client funds segregated from the company's own money?
  • Is there a compensation scheme, and what is its ceiling?
  • Are fees published as numbers rather than described as competitive?

None of these questions require a local licence to answer. They require the broker to publish the answers, which is exactly the kind of transparency our method is built to detect.

What the Numbers Leave Out

Our method has limits, and they are worth stating plainly rather than burying in a footnote.

Copy statistics are historical and backward-looking. A copied trader's visible track record does not include the costs a copier pays, so the copy portfolio will underperform the source account by the amount of the added friction. That gap is often small per position and material per year.

We also cannot verify a copy strategy's behaviour under conditions that have not happened yet. A trader who looks disciplined in a trending market may look very different in a flat one, and financing keeps charging either way.

RISK
Copied positions are leveraged exposures. A drawdown in the source account is mirrored proportionally in yours. Allocation caps and stop-copy controls limit the damage; they do not remove it. Size every copy allocation as risk capital, not as savings.

The Practical Exit

What this method produces, in the end, is not a score. It is a short list of things you can verify yourself before any money moves.

For a Pakistani reader, the sequence looks like this. Check whether the broker accepts clients from Pakistan at all, because a platform's fee schedule is meaningless if the signup form stops you. If it does accept you, or if you are evaluating an alternative that does, confirm the legal entity and its regulator before funding. Then price one realistic trade, not the best-case one, and see whether the numbers still work.

CopyTrader itself is a well-built mechanism with an honest description. It is also unavailable to Pakistan residents as a live account, which makes it a study tool here rather than a trading route.

The broader lesson holds for any broker you consider: a strong regulator, segregated client funds, published fees, and a long operating history are the criteria that survive a bad month. Novelty does not. A copied portfolio is only as good as the cost structure underneath it.

Questions that keep coming up

How much does CopyTrader cost per year?

Costs are spread-based on FX and CFDs, with no commission on real stock positions, a USD 5 withdrawal fee on USD investment accounts, and a USD 10 monthly inactivity charge after 12 months. The dominant annual cost in an active copy portfolio is overnight financing on held CFD positions.

Can I use the demo account to test a copy strategy?

Yes, and it is the most useful thing available to a Pakistani user. The demo uses a USD 100,000 virtual portfolio with live pricing, so you can watch how financing accrues on copied positions and how quickly spread costs compound on a high-turnover strategy. No real funds are involved at any point.

Does eToro CopyTrader work from Pakistan?

No live CopyTrader account is available to Pakistan residents. Multiple availability sources list Pakistan as not accepting new clients, and no Pakistan-specific eToro entity appears in the materials we reviewed. The demo portfolio is the one component a Pakistani user can access.
